Sports Morning Headlines-Wednesday, 6/1/11

News from around the Texas Sports Scene for Wednesday, June 1, 2011.

Mavs just need to be straight shooters - It is easy to view Dallas' 92-84 loss in the opener of the NBA Finals as a sign of the same-old Mavericks.  Here they were losing again in Miami, helpless to stop Dwyane Wade when it mattered, just like five years ago. They were dominated on the boards, their offense went kaput and for the first time in these playoffs, they now trail in a series.  But really the Mavericks have the Heat right where they want them.  If the Mavericks continue to move the ball as crisply as they did for most of Tuesday night, chances are they won't shoot as poorly as they did. And chances are they won't lose.  Or at least that's what they are hoping.   READ MORE

Tyson Chandler struggles on the glass - One of the big storylines heading into Game 1 of the NBA Finals was how the Mavericks' big men would handle the Heat's.  One big man, the Mavs' Tyson Chandler, didn't have his best performance.  Chandler struggled in his 34 minutes Tuesday night, scoring nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field but also tying his playoff low with four rebounds and playing in foul trouble most of the evening. He picked up his fifth foul with 10.1 seconds left.  "They were aggressive on the rebounds," said Chandler, whose team was outrebounded 46-36. "I thought we did a good job defensively of containing them and keeping them under control. But what we didn't do was secure the rebounds once we got a stop."   READ MORE

Nowitzki injures middle finger, and Mavs lose Game 1 - That quest to win their first NBA championship just got a lot tougher for the Dallas Mavericks.  Not only did the Mavs drop Game 1 of the NBA Finals, 92-84, to the Miami Heat on Tuesday, they also now have to worry about the health of All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki.   READ MORE

Warriors to talk to Spurs assistant - Though he insisted one month ago that he prefers to remain on coach Gregg Popovich’s staff, it appears Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer will interview with the Golden State Warriors about their head coach position.  Spurs general manager R.C. Buford confirmed Tuesday the Warriors had sought and been given permission to speak to Budenholzer about the job vacated when Keith Smart was dismissed after the regular season.  A report in the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times indicated that the Warriors’ new owner, Joe Lacob, will travel today to San Antonio to meet with Budenholzer, a member of Popovich’s staff for 15 seasons.   READ MORE

ProjectSpurs: Spurs news and notes: New Lakers coach, Silver Dancers, and more - The Los Angeles Lakers officially named former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Brown their new head coach. The Spurs' Silver Dancers held a photo shoot to model some summer fashions. I highly recommend taking a look. At The Hive ranks the January 22 meeting between the Spurs and New Orleans Hornets in New Orleans as part of their top 10 moments of the season for New Orleans series.  READ MORE

McHale confirms hiring - It's official: Hall of Famer Kevin McHale is headed to Houston.  Confirming numerous reports over the past couple days, McHale said Tuesday night he has agreed to become the Rockets' next coach. The former Boston Celtics great takes over for Rick Adelman, who left the team days after his fourth season in Houston ended.  "I was a little uncertain whether I was going to jump in with both feet -- I wanted it to be the right situation -- but after spending time with them, I felt this is a good situation to get involved in," McHale told NBA.com before Game 1 of the NBA finals.   READ MORE

NBA Mock Draft: Rockets Select Tobias Harris, Josh Selby - Here's my much-unanticipated NBA mock draft. Currently, I have the Houston Rockets taking Tennessee F Tobias Harris and Kansas G Josh Selby. No, no more Jeremy Tyler, though he could always sneak back into the mix. It's mock draft season: be prepared to see extensive draft board movement for absolutely no reason.  So, why these picks for Houston? Harris is a balanced, versatile player with plenty of upside in each area of his game, though none of those areas really stand out. I like to think of him as this year's version of Patrick Patterson, only the small forward (yes, small forward) version. Like Patterson, he's a smart guy with few holes in his game.   READ MORE

Ticket scalper sues Texas Rangers for striking business - A ticket scalper has sued the Texas Rangers for refusing to sell him tickets, ultimately striking out him out of business.  Lewisville resident Michael Melendrez has regularly purchased blocks of 100 tickets for $10 apiece and resold those tickets for as much as $75, until the Texas Rangers would no longer sell him tickets, according to the complaint.  Melendrez filed the suit in a Tarrant County court on May 20 against Rangers Baseball LLC, which operates as the Texas Rangers.   READ MORE

Addition by subtraction: Seattle - minus Milton Bradley - putting pressure on Rangers - This from the DMN's Gerry Fraley:  That team closing quickly in the Texas Rangers' rear-view mirror? It is the Seattle Mariners , who have undergone a remarkable change of direction since dumping malcontent outfielder-designated hitter Milton Bradley.  A win against Baltmore on Tuesday night put the Mariners at 12-3 since the club released Bradley, who was hitting .218 with no power.   READ MORE

Astros rally past Marmol, Cubs with six-run ninth in Lyles' major league debut - Astros top prospect Jordan Lyles was nothing but spectacular Tuesday night in "The Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field in his much-anticipated major league debut, as the 20-year-old right-hander from Hartsville, S.C., tossed seven stellar innings against Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago Cubs to earn a no-decision in Houston's stunning 7-3 comeback victory.   READ MORE

Lyles rises to expectations in debut - It was almost the perfect Major League debut for Jordan Lyles.  On the night the 20-year old Astros rookie became the youngest active player in the Majors, Lyles took the ball from third baseman Chris Johnson before the bottom of the first inning at historic Wrigley Field and just stood behind the mound for a moment.  "I just took it all in," said Lyles, who was in control of his pitches for most of the seven-plus innings he wound up throwing on Tuesday. "I just wanted to take it in and experience this. It couldn't get much better."   READ MORE

Is NFL Really Ahead Of Last Year's Pace For Season-Ticket Sales? - Daniel Kaplan from the Sports Business Journal reports that owners were briefed on the league's ticket sales results last week at their spring meeting in Indianapolis, and the news appeared to be good:  "The NFL is ahead of the pace on season-ticket sales compared with this point last year, a counter-intuitive trend given the uncertainty of the league’s 2011 season with a lockout that has now stretched into its 12th week. [...] The gains were ascribed in part to the earlier sales start many teams used this year in anticipation of a potential lockout, which began March 12."   READ MORE

Cowboys Targeted Alabama RB Mark Ingram In Draft - According to Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys reportedly had Albama running back Mark Ingram in their sights had they successfully traded down with the Jaguars in the draft.   READ MORE

Houston Texans: The Texans Redshirt Rookie Ben Tate - NFL seasons, despite being only 16 games, are long endeavors.  With every passing week, an NFL team changes remarkably.  Just halfway into a season, a team’s roster, expectations, and fan support have likely shrunk or swelled depending on results.  Given that the NFL is such a dynamic league, it is understandable that 2010 rookie Ben Tate is largely forgotten, even by diehard Houston Texans fans.  After the Auburn product broke his ankle in the first preseason game he was immediately placed on the injured reserve and never heard from again that season.   READ MORE

Leaf has benign tumor removed from brain stem - Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was recovering in California on Tuesday after doctors removed a benign tumor from his brain stem.  The 35-year-old Leaf had been experiencing dizziness and blurred vision before seeing a doctor May 18, his publicist, Margo Myers, told The Associated Press. He had surgery a week later at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., and was released Saturday.   READ MORE
