NBA Draft 2011

Our Texas teams came up big on Draft night, including the Longhorns.

Here is the rundown of our Texas teams' Draft Picks

Round 1:

With the 14th pick the Houston Rockets selected Marcus Morris, Forward, 6-9, 235 lbs from Kansas.

Strengths:
* Great face-up game with consistent range to 17 feet
* Can make 3-pointers
* Excellent ball skills
* Effective turn-around jumper

Weaknesses:
* What's his true position?
* Good but not great athlete
* Defense needs work

NBA projection:
Morris is considered a mid-first round pick. His size and perimeter skills will help him at the next level, but he’ll also have to figure out who he can guard. Is he powerful enough to bang with four men, or athletic enough to contain elite three men?

2010-11 Season:
Morris will need to clear off some space in his trophy room after this season, during which he was chosen a consensus second-team All-America, first-team All-Big 12 and the Big 12 Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Tournament.

With the 23rd pick the Houston Rockets selected Nikola Mirotic, Forward, 6-10, 220 lbs from Real Madrid (Spain).
** Traded to Minnesota on Draft night

With the 26 pick the Dallas Mavericks select Jordan Hamilton, Forward, 6-7, 220 lbs from Texas.
** Traded to Denver on Draft night

With the 29th pick the San Antonio Spurs selected Cory Joseph Guard, 6-3, 185 lbs from Texas.

Strengths:
* Competes
* Poised and mature
* Great shooter
* Can finish through contact
* Good defender

Weaknesses:
* Could get shot off quicker
* Could tighten handle a bit
* Needs to bump up free throw percentage

NBA projection:
Joseph hasn't signed with an agent yet, and there's a chance he could return to school. Joseph, competitor that he is, would make the most of whatever position he's drafted in and would stand a good chance to make an NBA roster. But he might be better served to return to school and team with fellow Canadian Myck Kabongo, a McDonald's All-American point guard, to form one of the best backcourts in the country.

2010-11 Season:
Joseph earned second-team Freshman All-America honors from the USBWA and was also chosen to the Big 12 All-Rookie team. He led the Longhorns in assists, three-point percentage and steals.

Round 2

With the 38th pick the Houston Rockets selected Chandler Parsons, Forward, 6-10, 215 lbs from Florida.
** Traded to Minnesota on Draft night

With the 57th pick the Dallas Mavericks selected Targuy Ngombo, Forward, 6-4, 204 lbs from Al Rayyan (Qatar).
* * Traded to Portland on Draft night

With the 59th pick the San Antonio Spurs selected Adam Hanga, Forward, 6-7, 200 lbs from Hungary.

Welcome to the NBA Rookies. Now let's hope there won't be a lock out.
