Five quick takes: Why Green’s value can’t be seen on box score - Danny Green’s statistical line Wednesday night showed a miserable offensive effort that he probably would  like to forget.  Green missed all six shots from the field, hit two foul shots to account for two points, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot in the Spurs’ 85-83 overtime victory at Orlando.  But the biggest reason the Spurs were able to escape with their first road victory of the season came from a defensive play by Green that might be the most critical play to this point of the season.  J.J. Redick was about the only Orlando shooter who was consistent late in the game. And Redick appeared to have an open look in the final seconds of overtime.  Green’s frantic leap caused Redick to pause slightly before releasing the shot. It was just enough to keep him from being able to release the shot before the buzzer.  Redick made the shot, but it was too late. Green’s leaping defense was the major reason he failed to beat the buzzer.   READ MORE

Parker leads Spurs over Magic in overtime - It took a while, but the San Antonio Spurs have finally found success on the road this season.  They had to work a little longer than normal to realize it, though.  After dropping their first five games away from Texas to begin year, the Spurs put the ball in the hands of one of their stars late in the game Wednesday night to help them grind out an 85-83 overtime victory over the Orlando Magic.  Tony Parker, who has helped carry the team with Manu Ginobili sidelined, scored 25 points, including 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, to help preserve the win.   READ MORE

VIDEO: Chandler Parsons, WTF Putback Dunk King - I'm embarrassed. I mean, I witnessed Chandler Parsons insta-GIF JaVale McGee in person on Monday in Washington. I see that he can dunk. But I didn't know that Chandler Parsons was MR. PUT-BACK DUNK™.  Well, he is.  "He does it every game," Patrick Patterson told me. "Every single game." Patterson said the dunk on McGee -- AGAIN: THIS FRIGGIN' DUNK -- wasn't even the best of the season. Of course, Parsons did it again on Tuesday against the Pistons. I had to see more.  The 6-foot-10 rookie has putback dunks in five of his seven starts this season (and tip-ins in the other two) via the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigan. Board this magic school bus and let's take a field trip to a place where fantastic things happen.   READ MORE

Keep an eye on Deron Williams, because the Rockets sure will - Just before the lockout started, the Summer of 2012 was shaping up as the Howard & Paul Free-For-All, but it was made emphatically clear to me then that neither player was considered the key get for the Rockets. Houston’s top target was New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams, multiple sources told ClutchFans.  Let’s talk informally about what I think is about to become a big question for the Rockets and their fans. Here’s a breakdown of some of the things to consider:  If the Rockets pursue Williams, it won’t be the first time.   READ MORE

Dirk Nowitzki has a cold; Vince Carter going home - Dirk Nowitzki missed Wednesday morning's shootaround with a cold and coach Rick Carlisle said he is hopeful his leading scorer will be able to play in tonight's game against the Los Angeles Clippers.  Vince Carter is already out of action and is headed back to Dallas today to have his sprained left foot examined Thursday by team doctor T.O. Souryal. That takes Carter out for Thursday's game at Utah and Saturday's at the New Orleans Hornets.  If Nowitzki plays tonight, he'll have a difficult assignment guarding Clippers power forward Blake Griffin, who is coming off a 10-point outing in Tuesday's blowout loss at Utah, is averaging 21.9 points on 52.9 percent shooting -- and has improved his mid-range jumper -- and 11.4 rebounds.  Carlisle said it takes a village, or something close to it, to take on Griffin.   READ MORE

Rapid Reaction: Clippers 91, Mavs 89 - How it happened: The Los Angeles Clippers' backcourt is going to do a lot of damage this season, but the Dallas Mavericks weren't prepared for whom would inflict it and how devastating it would be Wednesday night.  With Chris Paul missing his third consecutive game with a hamstring injury, Mo Williams, fresh off his own injury issue, and old Mavs nemesis Chauncey Billups combined to hit seven 3-pointers and score 47 points. Billups, who has tormented the Mavs before in a Denver uniform, delivered the final blow, a 3-pointer with one second left on the clock. It came just four seconds after Jason Terry knocked down his second 3-pointer in the final 36.7 seconds to bring Dallas back from an 88-83 deficit.  A last-ditch inbounds alley-oop pass to Ian Mahinmi failed and Dallas lost its fifth road game of the season, the third coming on a final-possession 3-pointer and the second in a row.  Williams and Billups carried Blake Griffin (14 points) and company to the win in their third game in three nights while Dallas spent Tuesday in L.A. recuperating from Monday's late-game heartache against the Lakers.   READ MORE

Rangers headed to club-record payroll - The addition of righthander Yu Darvish on Wednesday puts the Texas Rangers in position to shatter their previous payroll high for a single season.  The 2002 club, burdened with Alex Rodriguez's contract, had the top payroll in club history at $105.7 million. Rodriguez keyed a last-place finish by a club that finished 72-90.  Depending upon the outcome of the remaining arbitration-eligible players -- catcher Mike Napoli, shortstop Elvis Andrus and outfielder Nelson Cruz -- the Rangers could open the season with a payroll of nearly $135 million. A year ago, only four teams had a payroll at $135 million or more: the New York Yankees ($202.7 million), Philadelphia ($173.1 million), Boston ($161.8 million) and the Los Angeles Angels ($138.5 million.)   READ MORE

Only Yu? Rangers 'unlikely' to ink Prince - Shortly after announcing that the Rangers had signed pitcher Yu Darvish, general manager Jon Daniels was cornered off-stage and asked about the possibility of pursuing free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder.  "After going through this process, I'm intimately familiar with our budget," Daniels said. "It's very unlikely."  Said Rangers president Nolan Ryan, "We'll just have to see where things go the rest of the winter and see what our opportunities are. I'm not sure we can predict anything at this time."   READ MORE

Astros designate Craig Tatum for assignment to clear spot on 40-man roster - The Astros designated catcher Craig Tatum for assignment Wednesday in order to clear a roster spot for outfielder Jack Cust.  General manager Jeff Luhnow made the announcement.  Cust, 33, agreed to terms on a one-year, $600,000 contract with the Astros on Wednesday that includes a club option for 2013.  This led to Houston making a corresponding roster move.  The Astros claimed Tatum off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles in late October and added him to the club's 40-man roster.   READ MORE

Jack Cust: Clutch? - So The Examiner's Stephen Goff likes the Jack Cust signing, which is totally fine. For $600,000 of Maybe Money, it could pan-out.  But Goff says this:  The BA isn't great, but he hits for power, produces in the clutch and can get on base.  Let's see if he's right - how "Clutchy" is Jack Cust?   READ MORE

Restricted free agency tenders have changed in new NFL CBA - As we gear up for Texans free agent talk I decided to write a little 'what to expect' article on Arian Foster's free agency situation.  Foster will become a restricted free agent (RFA) when the free agency period begins (first week of March) unless the Texans lock him up to a long term deal before then.  If the parties can't agree on a long term deal before then, the Texans can 'restrict' Foster's movement by making him a 'qualifying offer' or tender.   READ MORE

Texans look to re-sign Williams, Foster - The price of success for an NFL team is having to shell out more money to keep its top players.  The Houston Texans, who nearly doubled their win total (11) this season from 2010 before falling to the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs, will have to pay that price this offseason.  "As we move forward, it's important for us to make good decisions that give us the best chance to win long-term," Texans GM Bob McNair told Houston Chronicle. "The first thing we do is to make an assessment of our team to find out where we think we're strong and where we think we need to improve. That assessment of where we are gives us our guidance as far as what we do from a player acquisition standpoint."   READ MORE

What it Means to Be a True Dallas Cowboys’ Fan – a Fan’s Take - I am a tried-and-true Dallas Cowboys' fan. It doesn't matter if they sign someone I dislike, it they hire a head coach I hate or if they make boneheaded moves in the front office. There have been a lot of reasons to turn my back on the Cowboys over the years but I have not. That is because I am not a person who bases the team I like on a specific person. I am a Cowboys fan because I bleed blue and silver, despite their shortcomings.   READ MORE

Cowboys' new OC has serious credentials - Either Cowboys owner Jerry Jones or head coach Jason Garrett threw the organization's loyal fans a bone when Bill Callahan was hired to take over as offensive line coach/offensive coordinator last week. This isn't an earthshattering move, but it does feel like an admission that Garrett could use a little help on the sideline.  And knowing how loyal Garrett was to longtime offensive line coach Hudson Houck, this couldn't have been an easy decision for him. You've read Houck's quotes about his "retirement," but I know the man well enough to believe he wasn't entertaining the idea of walking away a couple months ago.   READ MORE

Dallas Stars prospects: Notes and Stats - Here are some notes and a statistical update on Dallas Stars prospects playing junior hockey, in Europe and in college.  *F Matej Stransky (6th round/2011) has 6 points (4 goals, 2 assists) over the last three games. Stransky leads Saskatoon of the WHL in scoring with 48 points (25 goals, 23 assists) in 45 games. His 25 goals are tied for 12th in the WHL.  *D Jamie Oleksiak (1st round/2011) has no points and an even rating in his first three games since being acquired by Niagara of the OHL. Niagara won all three games .  *F Alex Guptill (3rd round/2010) had two goals and two assists as 15th ranked Michigan took two games from 2nd ranked Ohio State over the weekend. Guptill, a freshman, has 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists) over his last four games and is second on Michigan in scoring with 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 26 games. His 24 points are tied for second nationally in freshman scoring. With the two victories, Michigan climbed to 10th in the polls.   READ MORE

Dallas Stars Game 45 Scoring Chances: Another Loser Point - Game two of the "This Is Why Jamie Benn Is By Far The Stars Most Valuable Player" saga ended last night in a 3-2 shootout loss for your Dallas Stars at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings. Both games without Benn have been enjoyable to watch if you appreciate the sport at it's base level. No, there haven't been many goals without Benn around, but the Stars have clearly stepped up the work ethic to try to compensate for the lack of offense with both Benn and Mike Ribeiro out of the lineup. The result has been two well-played, enjoyable games.  The scoring chances from the Stars previous games can be found here. If you look at the St. Louis game compared to the Wings game you'll notice a trend that is probably going to continue until Benn and/or Ribeiro return. The Stars fight hard, stay in the game for a while, and ultimately hold on for dear life as the opposition gets stronger due to the talent disparity.   READ MORE
