The Celtic front office could have learned a thing or two from the San Antonio Spur organization, who have supplemented their own aging ‘Big Three’ by surrounding them with younger pieces. The Boston Celtics are off to a 5-9 start and their players are showing their age. The Celtics have one of the oldest starting line-ups in the league. Ray Allen and Paul Pierce for one are playing a team high of 36-37 minutes per game. Their front office obviously took a “lets win right now” type of attitude and it bore fruit in 2008 with a championship, but it has been an injury-plagued ride since then. The Spurs on the other hand haven’t had championship luck as of late but they have made themselves a younger team, while also staying relevant. They have up and coming players like Danny Green, Tiago Splitter and Kawhi Leonard. The lineup also features veterans that are just grazing their thirties like All-Star Tony Parker and forward Richard Jefferson—who both still have their speed and athleticism. Having this youth has allowed the Spurs the luxury of resting Duncan and Ginobili (before his injury), their averaging a meek 26 minutes per game. The Celtics best player is Rajon Rondo who is a fantastic point guard but as a playmaker he depends on teammates making shots. Outside of Rondo the Celtics young core consist of Brandon Bass and a highly inconsistent Marquis Daniels. The makeup of the NBA has changed over the last few years and having youth at the guard/forward positions is a must. Contenders all over the league are dealing with this very same issue. The Lakers and Mavericks are dealing with aging backcourt players, who are getting ripped on a nightly basis by up and coming guards. Players like Derek Rose, LeBron James, and Chris Paul are making teams pay for their lack of depth. The Spurs are developing a squad to help slow these type of players, they are loaded at the small forward position(Richard Jefferson/Kawhi Leonard/Danny Green) and their guards have good speed (Tony Parker/T.J. Ford/Gary Neal). The Celtics are a legendary franchise and their “Big Three” experiment was a success but has now run its course. The Celtics need to rebuild and perhaps try to mimic the San Antonio Spurs’ front office scouting success.
