Mavericks Survive Spurs Surge, Win in OT 101-100 - This one wasn't always pretty, and it wasn't always pleasant. But it was a typical meeting between these neighboring teams, going all the way to the wire.  Perhaps the most salient piece of information regarding the beginning of the game was that Dirk didn't touch the ball in the first four and a half minutes. The Mavs in general couldn't get much going to start- Vince Carter and Shawn Marion both badly missed their three point attempts. Dallas didn't get points on the board until Rodrigue Beaubois scored with 8:41 left to play.  Then Carter got himself an and-1 with some generous continuation, and Marion hit one of those typical Matrix-Floaters to get the offense going. When Jason Terry and Lamar Odom came off the bench, they jumpstarted it even more, with Terry having an immediate impact, going 3-3 for six quick points.  Brandon Haywood couldn't catch a pass to save his life, suffering from an apparent case of DampierHands. And most surprisingly of all (not that Haywood's fumbling was even remotely surprising) was that Dirk Nowitzki did not score in the first half. He took one shot and missed. Weird.   READ MORE

Rapid Reaction: Mavs 101, Spurs 100 (OT) - How it happened: The Dallas Mavericks survived a rough return by Dirk Nowitzki and a spectacular performance by the San Antonio Spurs' bench.  Dallas did it by hopping on the wings of the Jet.  Jason Terry, whom Nowitzki has long referred to as one of the game’s best closers, was at his clutch best after the Spurs reserves erased an 18-point deficit by stunning the Mavs with a 26-4 run fueled by a 3-point barrage.  With Nowitzki struggling offensively after a four-game layoff, Terry took over the game down the stretch. He scored 16 of his game-high 34 points in the final 6:43 of regulation and the overtime period. That included a pull-up to force overtime and a jumper to give the Mavs the lead for good in the final minute.  But everybody in the American Airlines Center held their breath until the final buzzer, when Danny Green missed an open 3-pointer.   READ MORE

Mavericks 101, Spurs 100 (OT) – final - The bench brought the Spurs back from an 18-point deficit but the Mavericks won 101-100 in overtime.  The Spurs’ Gary Neal scored 17 points in the second half and OT and Danny Green had 10 points in second half and OT.  Neal finished with 19 and Green had 12. Green hit a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation that was just a moment to late to count.  Tiago Splitter, Matt Bonner and James Anderson had eight points each off the bench.  Tim Duncan and Richard Jefferson had 12 points each. None of the Spurs starters played in the fourth quarter or overtime except for Kawhi Leonard for a few seconds in OT.   READ MORE

Bench rallies Spurs but not enough to top Mavs in OT - Jason Terry scored a season-high 34 points, including four in the last 42 seconds of overtime, as the Dallas Mavericks rebounded after blowing a big lead against San Antonio for a 101-100 victory Sunday night.  Terry put Dallas back in the lead to stay when he took a pass from Dirk Nowitzki for a 12-foot baseline jumper with 42 seconds left. After Shawn Marion stole the ball from Gary Neal, Terry had two free throws with 17 seconds left to make it 101-98.  Neal, who finish with 19 points, then drove for a layup and was fouled by Shawn Marion. But Neal missed a potential tying free throw that was rebounded by Ian Mahinmi, who then missed two free throw attempts.  After Neal got the rebound and the Spurs called timeout, Vince Carter knocked the ball loose. Danny Green grabbed it and threw up a shot that ricocheted off the front of the rim as the game ended.  Green and the Spurs thought he had a game-winner at the end of regulation, but his 14-footer was disallowed when replay clearly showed that shot didn't get out of his hands before the buzzer sounded.   READ MORE

Courtney Lee: I Could Have Lost My Life Tonight - Apparently, Courtney Lee was involved in a car crash following the Houston Rockets 97-84 win over the New York Knicks last night. Here's what he wrote on his twitter at 2:41 am:  Thanking God right now!!! Thanking Cadillac for airbags!! Without them I could have lost my life tonight and two others close to me.   READ MORE

Who is the Smartest Rocket? Introducing OALABII and Memorializing Shane Battier - The other day, Xiane suggested that the Rockets largely look for "high-IQ" players. And then I got to thinking about basketball intelligence when I remembered that Jeremy Lin was on the Knicks' roster. I don't think Lin has an exceptional "Basketball IQ" or anything, but he's obviously a pretty clever guy, and that probably translates to some level of intelligence on the court, I guess. But it really made me think about who on the Rockets has the greatest basketball sense on the court.  Of course, I could just go with my gut, right? I could say it's Lowry or Parsons or Scola or someone because they just seem like the type. But, instead, I'm going to take a page from Bill James and try to come up with a system to describe who, exactly, is "smart." It might not be quite scientific, but it's better than nothing.   READ MORE

Meeting with Roy Oswalt slated for Monday - The Rangers are scheduled to meet with free agent right-handed starter Roy Oswalt on Monday, a source confirmed Sunday afternoon.  The meeting was first reported by The Dallas Morning News.  ESPNBoston.com reported this weekend that Oswalt was close to a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals and various reports have suggested the pitcher’s preference is either St. Louis or Texas.  Other teams have also pursued Oswalt, including the Boston Red Sox. CBSSports.com reported Friday night that Oswalt had rejected a one-year offer from the Detroit Tigers.   READ MORE

Matt Harrison focused on improving in 2012 - Matt Harrison's 2011 season gave him a critical boost of confidence. He was able to stay in the rotation the entire season, threw a career-high 185 2/3 innings, won 14 games with a 3.39 ERA and got some postseason experience.  "Being able to make pretty much all my starts last year was big for me and get that full season starting under my belt, which I wasn’t able to do the two previous seasons breaking camp," Harrison said. "Hopefully, this year I can do the same thing and go out there and give them a chance to win every time out."  Harrison said he reviewed his 2011 season and was disappointed with how things ended. He struggled in the World Series, going 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA. He started Game 7 and gave up three runs on five hits in four innings, getting the loss.  "I really feel like I’m prepared to go physically too and am looking forward to learning from last year and improving on the mistakes I made," Harrison said.   READ MORE

Astros sign left-hander Zach Duke - The Houston Astros have agreed to terms on a minor league contract with free agent left-handed pitcher Zach Duke, General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today.  The deal includes an invite to Major League Spring Training camp for the 28-year-old Duke, who is a Texas native and currently resides in Fort Worth.  Duke, who pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011, has made 181 Major League appearances in his career, with 168 starts. He had spent his first six seasons (2005-10) with the Pittsburgh Pirates before being traded to Arizona following the 2010 season.   READ MORE

Random Random Astro - Mark Portugal: In this installment of Random Random Astro, we'll take a look at Mark Portugal. Mark was a starting pitcher for Houston from 1989 to 1993.  Mark was traded to Houston from Minnesota, where he had been a very mediocre reliever, for a player to be named later in December of 1988. That PTBNL ended up being minor league reliever Todd McLure, who spent one season in the Minnesota farm system before his professional career was over, so Houston basically got Mark for nothing.  Houston decided to turn him into a starter and his career blossomed with the Astros. During his tenure with the team, Mark went 52-30 with a 3.34 ERA. He also hit is only two career home runs while playing for the Astros, one his first season in Houston and the other his last. The best year of Mark's career came in his final season with Houston, 1993, as he went 18-4 with a 2.77 ERA, led NL pitchers in win percentage (.818) and finished 6th in Cy Young voting.   READ MORE

Myers representing unheralded Texans O-line at Pro Bowl - The Texans traded a sixth-round draft pick for Chris Myers in 2008. That trade is looking pretty good right about now.  Myers has started all 64 games since joining the Texans from the Denver Broncos four years ago. He has solidified himself as one of the best centers in football over the last couple of seasons, punctuated by his first-career Pro Bowl this week.  “That’s been a long time coming,” Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said Saturday after Myers and the AFC practiced at Aloha Stadium. “He’s been so consistent. He’s worked really hard at his craft, and it’s a great tribute to how much he’s put in and how much he does for us as a team, because he’s very important for us all across the front.”   READ MORE

Senior Bowl survey shows Texans as desirable destination - The first sentence in the article caught my attention.  "Southern Cal will win next year's BCS championship, Urban Meyer will be a huge success at Ohio State and the Houston Texans are the most desirable NFL team to join."  Wait ... what?  That's what Tommy Hicks had to say in a recent article appearing in the Mobile Press-Register.  Hicks explained in the article that those were some of the findings of the Press-Register's annual Senior Bowl player survey. More than 40 players who took part in the Senior Bowl participated in the survey, according to Hicks, although some players did not answer every question.   READ MORE

Super Bowl dream coming true for former North Texas player, Patriots guard - The Cowboys might have had Brian Waters. The six-time Pro Bowl guard said he had some casual conversations with the Cowboys, who had him in training camp in 1999 before cutting him.  But, after the Chiefs parted ways with him, Waters wanted to go somewhere he could win a championship, even if it wasn't home.  "Once the decision was made for me to leave Kansas City, the target was definitely going to be on teams that I felt had a chance to be in this game," Waters said Sunday at the first media session of Super Bowl week. "This was definitely the focal point for me."  Waters selected the Patriots, even though his family stayed behind in Dallas-Fort Worth.   READ MORE

Breaking Down the Dallas Cowboys’ NFL Draft Cornerback Options – a Fan’s Take - Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys has been at the college football Senior Game watching prospects, preparing for the 2012 NFL Draft. While watching these players, Jones has a lot of holes at Dallas to fill, from the cornerback and safety positions to the offensive line and possibly another linebacker or defensive end.  Here is a look at some of the cornerback prospects Dallas might be looking at to help their team in 2012.   READ MORE

Jamie Benn on ASG:'Something I'll never forget' - Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn will head back to Dallas with some great memories from his weekend in Ottawa, including a win in the NHL All-Star Game as Team Chara beat Team Alfredsson, 12-9, at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.  “It was a great experience,” Benn said. “They put on a pretty good weekend and it’s something I’ll never forget.”  Benn played on a line with Chicago’s Patrick Kane and Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle for Team Chara. He logged 14:02 of ice time, registering no points and no shots on goal. But this was less about the stats for Benn and more about the experience.   READ MORE

Benn Most Accurate Shooter At All-Star Skills Competition - The Dallas Stars lone representative at the 2012 NHL All-Star Game played the part of Texas sharp-shooter to perfection in Saturday's Skills Competition. Even though he hasn't played in nearly two weeks after an emergency appendectomy, he posted the two best times in the shooting accuracy challenge and also had the most impressive performance in the one-timer portion of the skills relay.  Benn started his night by going 4-for-6 in the accuracy competition in 13.583 seconds, and he beat Matt Read in the finals going 4-for-5 in 10.204 seconds. The two times combined were faster than it took several others, including Steven Stamkos, to hit four targets.   READ MORE
