The San Antonio Spurs cruise to their 16th win of the season against the team with the best record in the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Tony Parker destroyed the Thunder’s defense with a dazzling performance boasting 42 points and 9 assists. The Spurs continue to be a formidable opponent at home, improving their home record to 13-1—best in the league. Parker is now the Spurs all-time assist leader (passing Avery Johnson), and the feat proves that he is more of a facilitator than some people give him credit for.

Parker has been in the league for over a decade and he has always been known as a scoring point guard. It has been a reputation that has brought him much respect and criticism alike. It has sparked fans and experts to call for the team to pursue pass-first point guards like Jason Kidd and Steve Nash.

Parker took the criticism and used it as motivation; he continued to prove year after year that he was one of the top point guards in the league. He has wowed basketball fans with his speed, mid-range stroke, and ability to finish around the basket.

He has help lead the Spurs to three NBA championships and in 2007 became the only Finals MVP in team history not named Tim Duncan.

This season Parker has showed his leadership by looking for his younger teammates more often. He is currently averaging about two assists more than his career average. Players like Dejuan Blair and Tiago Splitter have benefitted the most from Parker’s court vision, both players’ scoring stats are higher and their turnovers are down.

Parker is also still leading the team in scoring, and his constant penetration in the paint has help the Spurs become one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the league. The Spurs have always thrived on a penetration-and-dish concept, which has been the foundation of their championship runs.

As the Spurs approach their annual rodeo-road trip (9 straight road games), Parker’s game will have to be even more potent for the team to have a successful trip.

The San Antonio Spurs have become a legendary franchise and Tony Parker has been an important part of that. He continues to rise to the occasion and prove that is undoubtedly the best point guard in Spurs history.
