The San Antonio Spurs have won nine games in the row and it is mainly because of the great play of the Spurs’ role players. The team is absolutely destroying teams with a complete offensive attack, most of the games end with several Spur players in double figures.
The Spurs also are playing great defense and this is partly a result of the growth of center Tiago Splitter. The Spurs are much tougher to score on when they pair Tim Duncan with an active center. So while Splitter's block numbers can improve, his activity around the paint has been promising.
Splitter received a hefty contract in the off season that raised a few eyebrows, but it is now obvious that his contract did not make him complacent in the summer. He is not a star player but he is becoming one of the team’s top role players. Last year, he ended the season averaging a little fewer than six rebounds a game, and so far this year he is averaging about 8 rebounds.
Splitter though is a player that can’t be fully defined by his statistics but more by his energy, which has been fantastic this season. He has been catching the basketball in traffic well and finishing with nifty moves in the paint. The center has even managed to hit a couple timely jump shots in games.
Tonight, against the Memphis Grizzlies’ front-line, Splitter had a season- high 17 points and 7 rebounds. Splitter seems to be more confident on the floor on both ends; confidence has always been a weakness for the center. In previous years he would get down on himself early in games if he missed a shot or two. Now he is letting the game come to him and staying ready to score when called upon.
The Spurs have been waiting for this Tiago Splitter for a long time and hopefully the center can keep improving on his game throughout the year.
