Houston Rockets like What They Have

With star player and center Yao Ming out for the season after getting injured in the playoffs the previous season, Houston was not expected to do well. In the end they finished the season eight games away from making the playoffs, but they were in contention for much of the season.

Owner Leslie Alexander must be pleased with the progress that his team made last season with the money he has spent recently to make sure the right players are back for the 2010-11 season.

Restricted free agent Luis Scola was signed to a five year, $47 million contract. Thirty year old Scola has been with the Rockets for the last three seasons, playing in every regular season game. His production and time has increased each season in almost every category; last season he averaged 16.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 32 ½ minutes.

Kyle Lowry, another young, restricted free agent, was also resigned. The Cavaliers had been trying to lure the 24-year old former first round draft pick, but the Rockets quickly matched the offer sheet that Cleveland had presented. Exact terms have not been made public yet, but the deal is reported to be for three years with an option for a fourth and valued at approximately $24 million. Lowry has played as more of a reserve role since coming into the league in 2006 with the Memphis Grizzlies. Houston acquired the former Villanova prospect as part of a three team trade during the 2008-09 season. Last season he saw time in 68 games averaging 9.1 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.6 rebounds.

According to general manager Daryl Morey the team had every intention of matching any offers that were made for Lowry or Scola.

First round draft pick Patrick Patterson has come to an agreement with the Rockets as well. Exact dollar amounts were not released, but Patterson’s agent, Odell McCants, has said that it is a standard rookie contract with two years guaranteed and two one-year options. In his final season at Kentucky he averaged close to 15 points a game and more than seven rebounds in just less than 33 minutes a game.  So far, during five summer league games Patterson has averaged 9.2 points and 7.2 rebounds a game with a high of 18 points coming against the Phoenix Suns.
