The Texas Longhorns insured that they would end the season in the top 25 of the BCS with a 21-10 win over the Golden Bears of Cal in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Wednesday night at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.Cal QB Zach Maynard was able to lead the Bears to a field goal on their opening drive of the game, but that was it for the golden Bears in the first half. The Texas defense clamped down hard forcing two turnovers and allowing only 41 more yards leading up to the intermission. Texas did not fare much better offensively in the first half. Freshman David Ash was given the start over Case McCoy. Head coach Mack Brown commented on how he wanted to see what Ash could do, but did not say that he wouldn’t insert McCoy if he thought a change could ignite some offense. Early on it looked like the Longhorns were going to need a spark. Ash was unimpressive in most of the first half, leading the team to a paltry 74 yards of offense, 30 of that coming on one play in the second quarter. What offense the team was able to muster they made good use of. The 30-yard pass in the second quarter led to a touchdown and a 7-3 lead at the half. “The team hung in there even though it was unbelievably sloppy,” Texas QB David Ash said. “I settled into the game and got into a rhythm.” The defense made sure that Ash and the offense did not need to do much to earn the win. On the night they sacked Maynard six times and forced five turnovers, one interception and four fumbles. Texas also held the Cal running game to just seven yards on the night. “We couldn’t get any space very often,” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. “They really limited the big play.” Not that Texas needs any help when it comes to recruiting, but a win in a bowl game will definitely give them a boost there. More importantly, it gives the team confidence going into the offseason as they look ahead to the 2012 season. “This will get us jump-started,” said Ash, who completed 14 of 23 passes for 132 yards. “The Texas Longhorns are on their way up.”
