Baylor Basketball Dominating the Competition

After years of ineptitude, the Baylor Bears football program appears to be on the right track. A top 15 finish and a Heisman trophy are proof of that.  For many schools that would be enough for students to proudly hold their heads high all year, regardless of how their other athletic teams competed.

This year, however, the Baylor alumni and the student body are in luck. Not only did their football team have a great season, but both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are dominating the competiton so far as well.

The Lady Bears appear to be ready to take care of unfinished business this season. So far they have absolutely run over the competition en route to an undefeated 21-0 record (through the end of January).

Run over is a nice way of putting what they have done to most of the competition so far. They have the second most productive offense in the nation with just under 82 points a game so far. Twice they scored less than 70, but they have also scored 90 or more—including a 109 point effort against Yale on Nov 22—seven times.

The average margin of victory for the Lady Bears so far has been 30 points (3rd in the nation). Not only are they the number one women’s team in the nation, but they have been a unanimous choice for the last nine weeks.

“I don’t know how many games it is now that we’ve held our opponent field goal percentage pretty darn low,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. “I just think right now, we’re playing well. And I think it’s very obvious on the defensive end of the floor what we’re doing.”

While the men have not been as successful, they are not far behind the women. As of Saturday’s win over the Texas Longhorns the men are 19-2. They had climbed up as high as No 3 in the nation, but had slipped to No 6 after a pair of back-to-back tough losses, an 18-point loss to Kansas (74-92) and a heart-breaking one-point loss to Missouri (88-89).

After a pair of strong wins over Oklahoma and Texas the men appear to have their swagger back, and are ready to make a run for the Big 12 title, their first since 1950 during the Bill Henderson era. For them to do so (without help), they will need to win the rematch against Kansas (February 8) and Missouri (February 11). A pair of games against Iowa State, who currently sit only a game back of the Bears in conference play, could be telling as well.

The road for neither team will be an easy one, but should they continue on their current path there looks to be a whole lot of dancing going on in Waco all throughout the month of March.
