J.J. Barea a giant menace to Mavericks foes - He looks like the kid next door. The one who ran errands and mowed all the lawns in the neighborhood. But these days Dallas Mavericks backup point guard J.J. Barea is busy mowing down NBA defenders one by one. And he's turning heads along the way. Mavericks survived Game 1 shootout, but hoping to avoid more - Sure, the Dallas Mavericks are more than happy they were able to get out of Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals with a 121-112 triumph over Oklahoma City. But it was those 112 points the Thunder scored, the 43 free-throw attempts the Thunder received, and those 40 points that Kevin Durant scored that is bothering the Mavericks. READ MORE
2011 NBA Draft Lottery: Houston Rockets Stay at 14, Luck Must Come Another Way - The suspense for Houston Rockets fans ended before it could begin. The team will again pick last in the lottery—a lousy consequence of a failed late-season playoff push. Hooray for a 43-39 finish. Hooray for last place in the NBA’s toughest sector. The Southwest’s quintet is loaded with giants and giant killers, so hooray for not running for the bushes in March. Hooray? A boo feels more appropriate. READ MORE

Are the Astros on the Cusp of a Turn-Around? - Ask anyone what it takes for a team to go from the bottom to the top and they will all say at least one thing in common-leadership. READ MORE Astros have tough Interleague slate on tap - Considering the Texas Rangers are the defending American League champions and the AL East is the toughest division in baseball, the Astros will be entering treacherous waters when they begin Interleague Play on Friday night in Toronto. The Astros, who last year went a club-worst 3-12 against AL clubs, will face the Blue Jays on the road this weekend before meeting the defending AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays and the loaded Boston Red Sox in Interleague Play. The Astros and Rangers will resume the Lone Star Series with three games in each team's ballpark. The Blue Jays, Rays, Red Sox and Rangers all had records of .500 or better after play concluded Wednesday, and they averaged 90 wins and 72 losses last year. READ MORE Rangers look to repeat 2010 Interleague results - Interleague Play was good to the Rangers last season. Extremely good or even great. Great as in turn your season around, get headed in the right direction, acquire Cliff Lee in your division and go to the World Series for the first time in club history. Yes, it was that great. The simple fact is the Rangers' memorable 2010 season really took off during a 15-game stretch against the National League. The Rangers began Interleague Play on May 21 against the Cubs, and never was the annual venture into battle with the NL more beneficial than last season. READ MORE Hamilton, Cruz feel fine after rehab starts - Josh Hamilton felt good so about how well his first rehab game with Double-A Frisco went on Wednesday night, he even asked the press for its opinion. It went pretty well. Hamilton eased a line drive over the left-field fence for a two-run home run, and he also beat out an infield hit as he moved closer to getting back to the Rangers. He finished the night 2-for-4. He will be the designated hitter again for the next four days -- one game for Frisco and three for Triple-A Round Rock -- and could be on schedule to play on Monday when the Rangers return home to play the White Sox. Underappreciated Dallas Cowboys: Defensive Line - This is part of the series on the All-Time Team of Underappreciated Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have been blessed since early in their history with some great defensive linemen. The list of names that appeared at the top of the ESPN poll were hardly surprising, though there are a few notable omissions. READ MORE Dallas Cowboys: Forget What Roger Staubach Says, Tony Romo Isn't a Super Bowl QB - When evaluating a professional passer, it's easy to look at the numbers. It's easy to look at the playoff berths, and it's easy to look at what others say about the quarterback. However, in Tony Romo's case, it is the hard part of evaluation that really proves who he is as a quarterback. For Romo, look for what you can't see, and you'll find out what you're just not seeing. Every year, the quarterback has one of the most talented rosters in the game around him. READ MORE Keo welcomes safety training - Texans rookie has skills to vie for a starting job - Under normal circumstances, safety Shiloh Keo, the Texans' fifth-round draft choice out of Idaho, would be participating in organized team activities this week. Because of the lockout, Keo is like other draft choices in that he's working out at home and preparing for when the Texans tell him to report. Keo (6-0, 224) is eager to learn Wade Phillips' defense. "I'm looking forward to it," Keo said. "I think I'll fit in really well. I can't wait." After the draft, general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak were asked to pick a draftee — selected after the first two rounds — they were most excited about. Both said Keo, who got a lot of attention at the scouting combine. READ MORE Wade Phillips: Why the Houston Texans Job Is Easier Than You Think - Much has been made of the 2011 season for the Houston Texans, and for good reason. Success will result in nothing less than a playoff berth. Failure, however, will mean an entirely new staff, the third in the franchise’s short history with no postseason appearances to show for ten years of toil. The most important man in determining the Texans fate is not its head coach; rather it will be the newly hired defensive coordinator. Wade Phillips will have to do what no other defensive coach has been able to do in Gary Kubiak’s tenure as the man in charge; produce even an average defense to go along with the high-powered offense. READ MORE Stargazing: Joe Nieuwendyk Unveils Partial List of Potential Coaching Candidates - There was a little news in the Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star Telegram about the Dallas Stars search for a new coach: Mainly that it's an extremely slow process that is only just getting started. No formal interviews have taken place yet. Mike Heika spoke with GM Joe on the phone (the GM is out of town currently, evidently) and he did provide some insight into the process, naming Glen Gulutzan, Willie Desjardins, Kirk Muller, Ken Hitchcock, Guy Carbonneau, Cory Clouston and Mike Keenan as candidates that he had either reached out to by phone or people that had actually reached out to him. The implication was that the pool of candidates could actually be larger than that so we should not assume that one of those men will be the next coach of the Dallas Stars. READ MORE
