Obama hails Dallas Mavericks for first NBA title - President Barack Obama saluted Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks on Monday as NBA champions who staged a season-ending charge to beat LeBron James and the vaunted Miami Heat and claim their first title with a "heart that's the size of Texas."   READ MORE

Dallas Mavericks Report Card: Early Grades for the Team's New Additions - After beginning their season just 4-5 through their first nine games of the regular season, the Dallas Mavericks don't seem to be the team that the whole world watched in last season's NBA playoffs.   READ MORE

Rockets’ Dalembert reflects on aftermath of Haiti earthquake - As he describes the children who rob him because they have no choice, with Rockets teammates Jordan Hill and Hasheem Thabeet listening in stunned silence, Samuel Dalembert throws his head back and laughs.  It is not Haitian, he said, to cry. Besides, those boys don’t know he would give them anything. As Dalembert tells of his first visit to Haiti in the days after the earthquake, there is pain in each word, anguish on his face. Even as he describes the work to be done, frustration fights with determination. Determination wins.   READ MORE

McHale cites Rockets’ lack of road intensity for team’s winless road record - As daunting as the early-season schedule seemed from the moment it was released, coming after a rushed camp filled with changes expected and unpredictable, the Rockets knew what was at stake. They knew better than most a slow start could cripple. The Rockets began last season 0-5 and fell to 3-7, their furthest from .500 of the season. They never recovered.   READ MORE

PROJECT SPURS:  Spurs call up Malcolm Thomas from D-League - The San Antonio Spurs have called up Malcolm Thomas from the D-League's Los Angeles Defenders. Thomas will have a friendly face waiting for him when he lands in San Antonio in former San Diego Aztecs teammate Kawhi Leonard. Thomas and Leonard were the Aztecs' best defensive players and paired together nicely. With Leonard very active on the boards, Thomas usually did his job, sealing off his defender or boxing out.   READ MORE

Preview: Spurs at Bucks - San Antonio is off to a strong start despite losing guard Manu Ginobili, who suffered a broken left hand in a game against Minnesota and will be out for six weeks. Ginobili was off to a torrid start, averaging 17.6 points and shooting 59%, including 52% from three-point range. Gary Neal has moved into the starting lineup at shooting guard after appearing in 80 games as a rookie last season and becoming only the second undrafted rookie to make the NBA's all-rookie team.   READ MORE

Number 5 and number 7, they’ve been here through thick and thin - Many wins and many losses and a brand new stadium. In ’88 and ’91, the two of them began. And looking back the Astros then, were surely in good hands.  The ‘90s rolled along, the rainbow jerseys put away. Number 5 and number 7 led the charge out every day.   READ MORE

No long-term deal for Holland right now - Long-term contract negotiations with the Texas Rangers and left-handed pitcher Derek Holland have been tabled, likely for the rest of this offseason, a source confirmed Monday. Holland’s representatives and the club had discussed earlier this offseason tying up the 25-year-old through his arbitration years and maybe a year or two into his free-agency period. But the sides couldn’t find enough common ground to get a long-term deal done right now.   READ MORE

Rangers had the wrong Larkin - As was certified by Monday's vote, Barry Larkin had a Hall of Fame career with Cincinnati. His younger brother did not fare as well with the Texas Rangers. In 1994, the Texas Rangers selected third baseman Stephen Larkin of the University of Texas in the 10th round of the amateur draft. He played in 179 minor-league games with the Rangers before being traded to Cincinnati in 1995 for third baseman Craig Worthington. Larkin played one game, in 1998, with his brother.   READ MORE

Sources: Dave Campo won't return - Secondary coach Dave Campo will not return to the Dallas Cowboys' coaching staff next season, according to sources. Campo has been on the Cowboys' staff for 18 of his 23 years in the NFL, including serving as the head coach during three 5-11 seasons from 2000-02. He was an original member of Jimmy Johnson's coaching staff in 1989 and earned three Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys in the 1990s. He returned to Dallas in 2008 after stints as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars. Campo declined to comment when contacted Monday.   READ MORE

Jerry Jones on Cowboys' plans: 'We'll make some changes' - Considering that the Cowboys finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs, it's a foregone conclusion that the team's management won't maintain the status quo. But in case there were any doubts, owner Jerry Jones tried his best to erase them last night when WFAA caught up with him at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, where he was attending a private screening of the movie, "Albert Nobbs." "We'll make some changes; I'll assure you we'll make changes," Jones said. "When you work for yourself, there's not but one thing to change -- that's what's in that mirror."   READ MORE

Texans looking good health-wise heading to Baltimore - It seems like a rare week when the Texans get out of a game without an injury that costs a key player a game or more.  And this is indeed a rare week, not only because the Texans won their first playoff game in franchise history, but also because they got out of the Cincinnati game relatively healthy.  The biggest concern was Owen Daniels as reports of a 'broken hand' circulated after the game Saturday night.  Gary Kubiak acknowledged that Daniels has 'an issue' with a hand, but he said it's not serious enough to keep Daniels out of the Division Round playoff game at Baltimore on Sunday.  "Owen does have a hand issue," said Kubiak.  "First off, it’s not going to keep him from playing. He’s fine. He’ll be back on the practice field when we get started on Wednesday. That’s nothing that’s going to hold him back. Still kind of in an evaluation process, but he went back in the game and he will be ready to go (Sunday). It’s not an issue from that standpoint.”   READ MORE

Texans' Wade could coach himself into new job - The Texans are in the playoffs for the first time in large part because of Wade Phillips. And they might lose Phillips because they are in the playoffs.  Phillips could possibly go from fired as Dallas Cowboys head coach to hired as Houston Texans defensive coordinator to hired as Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach within a year. Phillips said Sunday the Bucs asked if he was interested, and he told them he was.  Because the Texans are still in the playoffs — they play at Baltimore this week — this has irritated Texans fans, many of whom think the Bucs should have respected that Phillips still has work to do this season in Houston.   READ MORE

Stars 15th in ESPN Power Rankings - The Dallas Stars are 15th in this week's ESPN NHL Power Rankings, up two spots from one week ago. ESPN.com's Scott Burnside put together this week's rankings and offered this on the Stars.   READ MORE

Stars-Ducks preview: Dallas looking to beat Anaheim for third straight time - Benn is the reigning NHL first star of the week with four goals and three assists in the last three games, and he will probably see plenty of time against Getzlaf. Benn this season has 41 points (13 goals) and is plus-10 in 40 games. Getzlaf has 27 points (seven goals) and is minus-17 in 40 games.   READ MORE
