Parker available to assist Bonner - Tony Parker rarely delivers many fancy passes as the Spurs' point guard. But he helped punctuate the team's run early in the fourth quarter with a spectacular behind-the-back pass to Matt Bonner, which resulted in a key 3-pointer. The basket was particularly important for Bonner, who missed his first four 3-point tries in a frigid 1-of-9 overall start Thursday. And it came in the middle of a 13-4 run to start the final period that gave the Spurs the lead for good. “He was about 0 for 10, so he finally had to make one,” Parker said, chuckling. “But it was a big shot for us during the run.” READ MORE Knee injury, conditioning issues slow Nowitzki - It's been a week since Dallas Mavericks star forward Dirk Nowitzki returned from a four-game sabbatical to get in better shape and rest an injured knee. His jump shot and his game are coming along slowly. Nowitzki has scored just 28 points on 11 of 39 shooting in three games since his return. He will head into tonight's game against the Indiana Pacers following a season-worst 2 for 15 shooting performance in Wednesday's loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Nowitzki said the knee has improved and is no longer swelling after games. But he admits that his confidence has taken a hit, which is in turn affecting his game. READ MORE No word from NBA on whether Carlisle, Cuban will be fined or penalized - The fines and any other penalties against coach Rick Carlisle or owner Mark Cuban were put off for at least a day on Thursday by the NBA office. Carlisle is virtually assured of at least a fine for kicking the ball into the seats near the baseline early in the fourth quarter Wednesday. READ MORE Revisiting Gasol, Nene - A reader, StephenJCyrier, writes: Say it-”-the CP3 deal would have been an unmitigated disaster for the Rockets.” On the contrary, with the season having transpired as it has, of one thing I am more sure than ever: had the Gasol trade gone down, the Rockets would now be competing for one of the, if not the top seed in the Western Conference. The Rockets currently sit just outside the playoff picture at 12-10 yet were it not for some monumental collapses against lesser opponents, they would now be occupying the 4th seed. For the sake of evaluation, because those were uncharacteristic losses that should have been won (ie: they beat themselves against bad teams), we’ll take the middle ground and say that this current cast is a 6th seed. How would adding Nene, Gasol, and Hayes in place of Scola, Martin, and Dalembert affect this lineup? I think the output would be significantly higher. READ MORE Rockets’ grueling road trip will test their progress - The Rockets did not get the win Wednesday night. Kyle Lowry did not break through or leave his shooting slump behind. But the changes were obvious. They played much better, even in blowing a 19-point lead against the Spurs, than they had in the defensive debacle against the Timberwolves. But as the Rockets await one more home game, tonight against the Suns, before taking off on their longest road trip of the season, the changes go beyond improved defense or effort. The finger-pointing and second-guessing that followed Monday’s loss were gone. The video session was shorter and nowhere near as painful. Lowry, who had been a key through the Rockets’ seven-game winning streak and whose struggles have been front and center in their three losses in five games since, showed signs of turning things around. “I just got a little of my old self going, played with a little pep in my step, and I just played,” Lowry said Thursday. “Last night helped me with my confidence and getting the touch back. "Everybody hits a streak or a slump. It’s the way you get out of it, the way you bounce back from it.” In the first three games since the winning streak, Lowry made four of 29 shots. He made 10 of 22 in the two games this week but continued to struggle from distance, making one of seven 3-pointers. READ MORE
Hamilton relapses at area bar - Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, who has spoken openly about the alcohol and substance-abuse problems he has battled for most of his professional career, suffered a setback this week, a major league source has confirmed to FOX Sports Southwest. The incident occurred Monday night at Sherlock's Pub and Grill in Dallas, where Hamilton was seen drinking alcohol, according to the source. Hamilton's teammate, second baseman Ian Kinsler, went to the bar in an attempt to get the Rangers All-Star outfielder to return to his Westlake home, the source confirms. "We are aware of a situation but have no further comment at this time," the Rangers said in a statement. READ MORE
Carr has moved on - Time is supposed to heal all wounds. It took a few years but David Carr is over his release by the Texans in 2007, five years after he was drafted first overall and was supposed to become the first franchise player for the expansion team. “It took me a couple of years to look back on it and be an adult about it, honestly,” said Carr, now Eli Manning’s back-up with the Giants. “I think everybody would be (bitter). It’s hard not to be. But I find myself now realizing that they’re great people and there was some good friends I had down there and some good experiences. Now I do find myself cheering for them. It’s a big change I’ve had to make.” Carr, who is preparing for his first ever Super Bowl experience, said he remains fond of Texans owner Bob McNair. “I wish I could have done better for Houston, for Mr. McNair, really. He deserves it,” Carr said. READ MORE 'They use you up': Hall of Famer Dorsett suing NFL - The helmet-to-helmet shot knocked Tony Dorsett out cold in the second quarter of a 1984 Cowboys-Eagles game, the hardest hit he ever took during his Hall of Fame NFL career. "It was like a freight train hitting a Volkswagen," Dorsett says now. "Did they know it was a concussion?" he asks rhetorically during an interview with The Associated Press. "They thought I was half-dead." And yet, he says, after being examined in the locker room - a light shined in his eyes; queries such as who sat next to him on the Cowboys' bus ride to the stadium - Dorsett returned to the field and gained 99 yards in the second half. Mainly, he says, by running plays the wrong way, because he couldn't remember what he was supposed to do. "That ain't the first time I was knocked out or been dazed over the course of my career, and now I'm suffering for it," the 57-year-old former tailback says. "And the NFL is trying to deny it." READ MORE Michael Irvin: "Dez Bryant will be the best receiver in the NFL.'' - The Dallas Morning News ran a brief report earlier today in which it quoted Michael Irvin as follows: "I thought Dez made great strides this year on the football field,'' said Irvin, who stressed Bryant must continue to work on his craft and conditioning. "He has a lot of room to continue to grow, but he made great strides. "When Dez really locks it all in, understands it, Dez will be the best receiver in the NFL.'' One of the peculiarities of being a Dallas Cowboys fan is that you constantly hear about how a player on your team, a coach, the stadium, the cheerleaders - really anybody and anything associated with the franchise - is overrated. This of course is the default setting for any non-Cowboys fan, and as such is so prevalent everywhere you go and everywhere you look that even some Cowboys fans have succumbed to this notion. Dallas Stars Fall To San Jose Sharks 5-2 - In this late evening (morning?) game finish, we shall start this recap off with a little nursery rhyme: There was a little girl who had a little curl -- Right in the middle of her forehead; -- When she was good, she was very, very good, And when she was bad she was horrid. It seems to sum up these past two games of the Dallas Stars rather fittingly. After a spectacular beating of the Anaheim Ducks last night, the Stars were looking for their first win on the second night of a back to back this season. They went up against the high flying San Jose Sharks, who they've lost four straight games against. They've never lost five in a row to the Sharks...until tonight. READ MORE
