Action started on Friday night in Fort Worth with the Nationwide Series race and concluded on Saturday with the Sprint Cup Series one. At least for the rest of the weekend, both winners will call ‘169’ their favorite number because they both led their respective race for 169 laps. For Carl Edwards in the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300 (the Nationwide race on Friday) it meant a dominating win, one in which he led for the majority of the 200 lap race. It is also his 30th career victory in the Nationwide series and first of the season for the veteran driver. The victory almost did not happen. During the 88th lap he and Kyle Busch, the winner of three of the last four Nationwide races, were running a pretty close 1 and 2. Tim Schendel, in last place and nine laps behind Edwards and Busch, blew a tire coming out of the first turn sending his car shooting up the track and right between Edwards and Busch. Edwards escaped with a few scratches, but Busch ended up hitting Schendel’s car and was knocked out of the race. "Just sheer luck of timing, the car ended up missing us and caught him instead," Edwards said. "Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw that car turn. ... I'm glad that I caught it. A split second later, it would have been over." Edwards, who started the race in the pole position for the third time this season, took the checkered flag with Brad Keselowski less than half a second behind him. The Samsung Mobile 500 (Sprint Cup Series race) Saturday night was a bit more dramatic with 31 lead changes spread among 13 drivers and five cautions. The eventual winner, Matt Kenseth, took the lead back over for the final time with 13 laps to go after Kyle Busch had to pit, giving up the 8.2 second lead he had at the time. Kenseth had a pretty hefty cushion, 8.315 seconds ahead of Clint Bowyer, by time he crossed the finish line. With the win, Kenseth snapped a 76-race winless streak taking the 19th checkered flag of his career and first since he won the first two races of the 2009 season that February. "After over two years, I didn't know if I'd get a chance to get here again," Kenseth said in Victory Lane. The race was the first one under the stars this season for the Sprint Cup Series and the 21st Sprint Cup event held at the Texas Motor Speedway since it opened in 1997. With 169 laps in the lead, Kenseth became the overall career laps leader at TMS with a total of 669 laps over 18 starts. Edwards had a pretty solid day on Saturday, finishing in third and earning enough points to become the new points leader in the Sprint Cup Series. |
